VOLUNTEER GARDENERS NEEDED
We are seeking volunteers for an ongoing allotment project, which will provide sustainably grown, fresh produce to The Perfect Place To Grow Kitchen. If you love gardening or just fancy getting your hands dirty, we need volunteers on a regular basis on Wednesdays from 10am to 3pm (Quex Park, Silver Ave, CT7 0BH). We will have coffee, tools and gloves - but please dress for the weather! We will also need ongoing allotment volunteers on a regular or adhoc basis.
We have the privilege of sharing an allotment in collaboration with Jack Scott, who is Quex and Nonington Farms’ vegetable farmer and was named BBC Countryfile Young Countryside Champion. Our dream is to make the land fruitful and plentiful, so that trainees can grow their own produce, which they can then turn into healthy and delicious ready meals in The Perfect Place to Grow kitchen. A portion of these frozen ready meals will be sold on site to raise funds for the project, and we’ll donate the rest to food banks and organisations locally.
We have partnered with Margate’s Windmill Community Gardens over the past year, to introduce trainees to basic gardening skills, how to grow and maintain fresh produce, and the importance of sustainability and wellbeing through nature. Our next step will be to build a low-intervention, no-dig growing plot at Quex Park, Birchington, to provide further training into sustainable farming practices. Jack Scott will mentor our trainees and share his in-depth knowledge of agriculture and the local farming network with the team. We also desperately need volunteers to help us plant seeds and support us with ongoing maintenance.
This allotment project will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the trainees, whilst also helping the project work towards our zero-waste goals. Since the produce grown will be directly processed to make healthy and delicious frozen meals at The Perfect Place to Grow, we will be able to minimise all waste.
These meals will serve a dual purpose, as 50% will be used to raise funds for ongoing work at The Perfect Place to Grow, and 50% of meals will be donated to partners in the community working with families and young people struggling with the cost of living. This allows one small project to have the greatest reach across the wider community benefiting as many people as possible.
If you’d like to be part of the Green Team, please register your interest here. You can also email ani@theperfectplacetogrow.org or call Ani on 07723 141 336. We will have coffee, tools and gloves - but please dress for the weather! We usually meet just before 10am by the Watering Hole cafe, where there is a car park and toilets. The plot is at the end of Silver Avenue, just a few minutes away.
