8-9 MARCH: A TASTE OF BRAZIL
Join us for lunch on March 8th and 9th from 12-4pm to share a taste of Brazil with Gabriela Max.
NO RESERVATIONS NEEDED.
We are very excited to welcome the painter, artist and TKE Studio Member as Gabriela shares recipes from her lived experience. Born and raised on a farm in a small countryside town in Brazil, her mixed heritage – Spanish, Italian, Lebanese, Lithuanian, British, and Chinese – gives her a sense of enormity that she belongs to the world, but as her choice, the Natural World.
No reservations needed, and Gabriela’s set menu will include: Feijoada, cassava, rice & beans (or vegetarian alternative), Passionfruit Mousse and Guarana.
Gabriela tells us "Feijoada is a national dish of Brazil. It was brought to the country during colonisation, the dish has been adapted and evolved since, becoming a symbol of Brazilian identity and cultural diversity. Feijoada originated in the senzalas (slave camps) on sugar and coffee plantations, where African slaves cooked leftover pork from their masters with black beans. It is a ritual feast that honours the Afro-Brazilian god Ogum.”
She explains that, “Eating feijoada overseas has the magic of transportation, while one feels straight away eating on a table in Brazil, it has the comfort of a Brazilian hug, the warmth of sun ray touching you."
Gabriela has recently created a series of egg tempera pig paintings, which has particular resonance with feijoada on the menu. Gabriela explains: “The slaves changed the Portuguese dish with white beans to black beans and used the leftovers of a pig to create what is now the food that represents the country, the feijoada. The power to answer slavery with art, the creation of something unique made with passion.”
